Fulham is green, close to the water and busy, in about equal measure. A park is a couple of minutes from most front doors. The Thames curls round the whole place. There are hundreds of shops and a few dozen pubs. For somewhere this packed with people, there is a surprising amount of room outdoors.
The average home in Fulham is about 125 metres from the nearest green space and has around 53 green spaces within a kilometre. Brompton Cemetery is on the register of historic parks and gardens, and in a district this crowded the dead get some of the best green space going. Wandsworth Park is just across the water.
Blue space is about 570 metres from the average front door, with around 47 stretches of water within a kilometre. Fulham fills a loop on the north bank of the Thames, facing Putney and the London Wetland Centre in Barnes across the river. The river explains the walks, the views and most of the flood map.
The National Cycle Network is about 640 metres away on average, and about 43% of postcodes are close to it. There is no ancient woodland at all.
Fulham's rated premises include 936 shops, 38 pubs and 93 restaurants. That puts shops well ahead of everything else, and it makes for a high street where you can buy most things and find a drink fairly easily.
Hammersmith and Fulham recorded fine-particle pollution of about 9.1 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024, a single figure for the whole borough.
The feel of Fulham comes from the river and the old estates along it. Fulham Palace and Hurlingham House are both on the riverside fringe, and Parsons Green keeps its small triangular green on the inner side. Thomas Crofton Croker described the district from a pedestrian's point of view in 1860, and it is still mostly a place to walk round.
Private outdoor space comes to about 13,600 square metres of garden for every 1,000 residents across Fulham's neighbourhoods. In a district where about seven in ten homes are flats, much of that garden belongs to the terraces, so a flat buyer should check whether the garden in the particulars is theirs or shared with the building.
The valuation list has 2,896 rateable premises in the area, with offices the biggest single group at 1,038, ahead of the shops. These are premises on the rating list, which is not the same as businesses currently trading. Exactly 1 holiday let appears among them, so the people on Fulham's pavements mostly live here.
Of the 504 food outlets with a hygiene rating, about 74% hold the top score of five and about 3% are at the low end of the scale.
No protected landscape overlaps Fulham. There is no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest and no ancient woodland. The nature here comes with railings, opening hours and a riverside path.
The surroundings are one of Fulham's real strengths. Parks are almost on the doorstep, the river is a short walk away and the high street covers the daily basics.
