Is Faversham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Faversham.

Faversham is about as safe as the rest of Swale, and neither better nor worse than an ordinary market town. Its crime rate sits a shade under the borough's. Violence and sexual offences make up a smaller share of reports than they do nationally. Anti-social behaviour makes up a bigger one. You are more likely to be kept awake by someone else's evening than put in danger by it.

In the year from June 2025 to May 2026, police recorded 2,394 crimes in Faversham. The published rate for that period was about 102 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 3% below the Swale average. The rate is calculated on its own statistical population base, so it is the figure to use, rather than a sum you could work out from the headline count.

The Swale-wide rate for the same year was about 105 per 1,000. Put next to Faversham's 102, the gap is a rounding difference, not a separate category. Estate agents calling the town "safer than the borough" are technically correct, but only just.

As neighbourhoods go, Faversham is fairly compact, averaging about 5,000 residents per square kilometre across its areas. Unemployment stood at about 3% at the last census, and about 3% of households were overcrowded. None of those numbers explains the crime rate by itself. They describe a working town with people living close together, not somewhere under strain.

Violence and sexual offences are the largest category at 32% of recorded crime, against 35% across England and Wales. That is a broad legal grouping which includes common assault without injury, and it tops the list almost everywhere, so a share below the national one is mildly good news, not a warning. The real difference is anti-social behaviour, at 25% of reports here against 16% nationally. That is the complaint that shows up most in Faversham, and it is noise, nuisance and aggravation more than harm. Shoplifting accounts for 9% against 8% nationally, criminal damage and arson 9% against 7%, other theft 6% against 7% and vehicle crime 4% against 5%. Those four sit close enough to the national figures that there is no story in them.

Kent Police, the force covering Faversham, charged a suspect in about 16% of cases over the same twelve months, against about 12% nationally, which put it 6th of 42 forces in England and Wales. That is a force-wide number, not a figure for the town, and it measures what happens after a report rather than how likely a crime is. In about 36% of cases, the investigation closed with no suspect identified. If your shed gets emptied, that is the realistic answer to whether anyone will be caught.

Faversham's safety is average: no worse than the borough, a little noisier than the national mix, and nothing a sensible buyer needs to plan around.
