Is Clapham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Clapham.

Clapham is safer than the rest of Lambeth. Its crime rate comes in about a tenth below the borough's. Violence is a smaller share of local crime than it is nationally. Theft from people out and about is a larger one. Clapham is crowded and busy, its crime follows the crowds, and the residential streets get off fairly lightly.

Police.uk records 11,314 crimes in Clapham in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, and puts the published rate at about 136 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 10% below the average for Lambeth. A full twelve months goes into that number, so one bad summer weekend on the Common can't tip it into a different story. The police.uk street map shows the same period street by street and is worth a look for the road you are actually considering.

Lambeth's own rate over the same year is about 151 per 1,000. So Clapham sits at 136 against the borough's 151, which puts it in the calmer part of a busy inner-London borough and still well short of a village.

Clapham averages around 15,000 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 4%, and about 8% of households are overcrowded. It is a packed, working, mostly young neighbourhood, and fifteen thousand people to the square kilometre gives a crime map plenty to record without any of them behaving especially badly.

The mix is where Clapham stands out. Violence and sexual offences, the largest category almost everywhere and a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, make up about 21% of local crime against about 35% nationally. Anti-social behaviour is also about 21%, against 16% nationally. Other theft is about 9% against 7%, and shoplifting about 9% against 8%, both close to the national picture. Vehicle crime, at about 9% against 5%, runs higher than the national share. The real outlier is theft from the person, at about 9% here against about 2% nationally. Crime in Clapham is mostly about what you are carrying and only rarely about what happens to you.

What happens after a report is a separate question with a separate answer, and it belongs to the force, not the neighbourhood. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases across London, against about 12% nationally, over the same twelve months. That places it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That figure says nothing about how safe Clapham's streets are, and quite a lot about the odds of getting a stolen phone back.

Clapham is one of the safer parts of its borough. The thing to guard is your pocket on a crowded evening, more than your front door.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
