What are the schools like in Chippenham?

For anyone buying or renting in Chippenham.

Good, and reassuringly unexciting about it. Across the county, five in six graded schools are good or better. Outstanding is rare. Failing is rarer still. The drama in Chippenham schooling happens in the admissions letter, not the inspection report.

Ofsted has graded 128 settings across Wiltshire, and 106 of them are good or better, which is roughly five in every six. Six hold an outstanding grade, 100 are good, 20 require improvement and two are inadequate. These counts cover the whole local authority, not Chippenham alone, so they describe the county system a Chippenham child sits inside rather than the town's own report card. Another 73 settings hold no published grade yet and are left out of those figures entirely. Most of the system is solidly good rather than glittering, and the outstanding badge is scarce enough that parents who fixate on it are chasing a handful of schools across an entire county.

The usual warning applies with extra force here. Living near a school does not get your child into it. Admissions follow the council's published criteria, and distance usually matters, but buying a house because it sits close to a particular school is a bet placed on rules that have no idea you exist. Check the admissions arrangements for the specific year of entry before an offer goes in, not after the offer letter arrives.

The secondaries carry the town's history with them. Hardenhuish School sits in Hardenhuish Park, which the county bought in the 1930s to house the old grammar school, and the manor house on the site is listed. Sheldon School counts the singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin among its former pupils. Abbeyfield School came with the most dramatic groundwork in Wiltshire: in 1998, preparing the site behind Hardens Mead turned up unexploded Second World War bombs, and the army had to blow them up before anyone could lay a brick. It remains the only local school with a controlled explosion in its founding story.

At primary level, the town-centre and suburban options include Frogwell Primary School, Monkton Park Primary School, Redland Primary School and St Paul's Primary School, alongside a spread of Church of England primaries in the surrounding villages. For post-16 technical and further education, Wiltshire College and University Centre has its campus on Cocklebury Road, on the same stretch where the town's first county school opened in 1900.

Schools are one of Chippenham's real strengths. The system around it is good almost everywhere, and the only thing that stays hard to secure is the one place you wanted.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
