Is Chippenham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Chippenham.

Safe enough to live in, less safe than the county it sits in. Crime runs above the Wiltshire rate. The extra leans towards nuisance rather than danger. The county force charges fewer suspects than most. Chippenham is safe the way a busy market town is safe, which is a different thing from the way a Wiltshire village is.

Police.uk recorded 2,896 crimes in Chippenham in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 74 per 1,000 residents. That sits roughly 18% above the Wiltshire average. The number is not a scandal, but it is not the one people picture when they hear "north Wiltshire market town" either, and buyers who arrive expecting village-green quiet are the ones most surprised by it.

Side by side, the gap is easier to read. Chippenham runs at about 74 crimes per 1,000 residents, and Wiltshire as a whole at about 62. The county figure is spread across a great deal of farmland and small villages, so a town with a railway station, a shopping centre, retail parks and a Friday night will almost always come out above it. That explains the gap. It does not make it disappear.

The town the numbers describe is fairly dense by Wiltshire standards, at about 4,370 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. None of that is the profile of a troubled place. It is the profile of an ordinary, employed town with enough people packed into the centre to generate the usual town-centre business.

The mix is close to the national one almost everywhere, which is the most reassuring thing on this page. Violence and sexual offences make up about 37% of recorded crime here against 35% across England and Wales, a near match, and that heading covers a wide statutory range down to common assault without injury. Shoplifting runs at about 9% against 8%, criminal damage and arson at about 8% against 7%, public order at about 7% against 7%, and other theft at about 5% against 7%. The one category that stands out is anti-social behaviour, at about 22% of incidents against 16% nationally. That is where Chippenham's excess lives: noise, nuisance and the sort of thing a council's anti-social behaviour team spends its evenings writing up rather than anything that makes the regional news.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is, and the answer comes from Wiltshire Police as a whole, not from Chippenham. The force charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 32nd of 42 forces. About 34% of cases across the force close with no suspect identified. Anyone reporting a stolen bike should manage their expectations accordingly. That is a verdict on the force's clear-up record, not on the streets of Chippenham, and the two should never be read as one number.

Safety is where Chippenham falls short of the rest of its county. Nothing in the mix marks it out as dangerous, but it runs busier and more bothered than the Wiltshire around it, and the anti-social behaviour share is the part a buyer should go and see for themselves on a weekend evening.
