What are the schools like in Charlton, London?

For anyone buying or renting in Charlton, London.

Schools are one of the best things about Charlton, and the primaries are the main reason. There are seven state primaries in the area. Nearly every graded school in the borough is good or better. There is just one secondary in the area itself. Parents get plenty of good choice at primary age and a much shorter list at eleven.

The seven mainstream state primaries around here average a scaled score of about 106 in Key Stage 2 maths. Charlton Manor Primary School is the one carrying the name. Windrush Charlton Primary, Thorntree Primary and Cherry Orchard Primary fill out a list that covers the neighbourhood closely enough that most front doors have a choice of primary. For families with young children, that is the strongest part of what Charlton offers.

At secondary level the picture narrows to one school. Royal Greenwich Trust School is the only mainstream state secondary in the area, and its pupils average about 37 on the Attainment 8 measure of results at sixteen. It opened in 2013 as a university technical college under the University of Greenwich and has since become a free school, so it has already been through more rebranding than most of the parents choosing it. With one school in the area, the real secondary decision for most Charlton families involves a bus and a look at the rest of the borough.

Across Greenwich, Ofsted has graded 40 settings in this count and rated 37 of them good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Eleven are outstanding, three require improvement and none are inadequate. That profile belongs to the whole borough, so it tells a Charlton parent what the wider system is like and nothing about any single classroom on Charlton Church Lane.

Royal Borough of Greenwich admissions rules decide who gets a place, so living around the corner from Charlton Manor or Thorntree does not secure one, however close the house is. Ask the council for the last few years' furthest offer distances at the school you have in mind, and compare them with the walk from the house you are about to buy. Parents who skip that step tend to learn the admissions rules from the offer letter, in the spring their child starts school.

Charlton's schools are one of its real strengths. The primaries are strong and the borough around them is overwhelmingly rated good, so the only part that needs planning is the move to secondary school.
