What are the schools like in Chafford Hundred?

For anyone buying or renting in Chafford Hundred.

Chafford Hundred's schools are good, and two of them are even named after the estate. Four in five of the graded schools nearby are rated good or better. Three are outstanding. For the average home, the nearest primary is about a ten-minute walk. Few estates in Essex have their school run this short.

Across Thurrock, Ofsted has graded 24 schools in the area this page covers, and 19 of them are good or better, about four in five. Three of those are outstanding. Four require improvement and one is inadequate, which is a small number but not zero, and the family whose child ends up there takes little comfort from the other 23. A further 25 settings have no published grade yet. That says nothing about their quality either way. They simply haven't been graded.

The estate's own schools are Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hundred and Harris Academy Chafford Hundred, both part of the same academy trust. The secondary's best-known former pupil is the singer Louisa Johnson, an alumna careers advisers mention once before moving on to apprenticeships. Thurrock Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so a house within sight of the gates still doesn't secure a place. The council's admissions pages show how far the last child admitted lived from each school, and that figure is worth checking before the house is chosen. Further out, Harris Academy Riverside and The Gateway Academy serve the Purfleet and West Thurrock side, and William Edwards School is another secondary option within reach.

Distances favour the younger children. The Department for Transport's modelled times, from 2019, put the nearest primary at about an 11-minute walk from the average home, or ten minutes by public transport. The nearest secondary is about 16 minutes on foot, 14 by public transport and nine by car. Primaries such as West Thurrock Academy and Purfleet Primary Academy cover the neighbourhoods towards the river. The jump from primary to secondary here is a few extra minutes rather than a new bus route, and that is unusual enough to be worth something to a family.

Schools are one of the best things about Chafford Hundred. Most of the graded schools nearby are good or better, and the ones on the estate are close enough to walk to, so families have a good reason to put up with the rest.
