Canning Town is about as safe as the rest of Newham, and no safer. Its crime rate is close to the borough's. Violence makes up a smaller share of it than it does nationally. Phones and cars make up a larger one. On paper it is an ordinary busy part of east London, with a bus station and plenty of thieves keen on phones.
Police.uk records put Canning Town's crime rate at about 150 per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 2% above the Newham average. That rate is the published figure, built on its own population base, and it covers 10,950 recorded crimes over those twelve months.
Newham as a whole recorded about 146 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against Canning Town's 150. The gap between the two numbers is small enough that a single busy month at the bus station could close it or double it.
Canning Town is very crowded. Its neighbourhoods average about 21,600 people per square kilometre, about 17% of households are overcrowded, and unemployment is about 5%. Those numbers describe how many people share the streets and stairwells, and nothing more. Put that many people into that little space and somebody is always awake, which is a fact about the street at three in the morning and not, on its own, a fact about crime.
Violence and sexual offences, the broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, account for about 24% of recorded crime in Canning Town, against about 35% across England and Wales. That is a smaller share than the national one. Anti-social behaviour is 18% here against 16% nationally, close enough to call level, and shoplifting is 7% against 8%. Three categories stand out in the other direction. Vehicle crime is 11% against 5%, other theft is 10% against 7%, and theft from the person is 6% against 2%. More than half of households here don't own a car, and the cars that are here still draw that much attention. With a bus station this busy, keep your phone in an inside pocket on the platform.
Charging is decided across the whole force. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 53% of its cases are closed with nobody identified. That figure tells you what happens after a report, and nothing about how likely you are to need to make one. For a stolen phone, the crime reference number will mostly be useful for the insurance claim.
Canning Town's safety is average. It is not dangerous, it is a little light-fingered, and anyone who keeps their phone and car keys out of sight should get on fine.
