Is Camden Town a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Camden Town.

Camden Town is less safe than the rest of its borough, and the crime it does have is mostly the sort that leaves with your belongings. The rate runs well above the Camden average. Theft from the person is the standout. Violence is a smaller share than usual. Your phone is in more danger here than you are.

The Metropolitan Police recorded about 24,180 crimes in the area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 291 per 1,000 residents. That puts Camden Town roughly 29% above the average for the London Borough of Camden as a whole.

The borough-wide rate over the same twelve months was about 226 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Camden Town's 291. Camden is already a central London borough with plenty of visitors and nightlife of its own, so the gap is Camden Town standing out from a crowd that was already busy.

The area packs in about 19,470 people per square kilometre. About 4% of working-age residents were unemployed at the 2021 Census, and about 12% of households were overcrowded. None of those figures causes crime. They describe a dense, crowded inner-city neighbourhood with a great many people walking past each other at close quarters, day and night.

The mix is where Camden Town tells its own story. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 19% of recorded crime here, close to the national share of about 16%. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, account for about 18%, against about 35% across England and Wales, so they carry far less of the total than usual. The jump is in theft. Theft from the person makes up about 16% of crime here against about 2% nationally, and other theft about 15% against about 7%. Shoplifting at about 7% and public order offences at about 5% sit close to their national shares of about 8% and 7%. The Stables and Camden Lock Market draw the weekend crowds that the stall holders want, and the thieves came for the same reason.

The Metropolitan Police Service, which covers the whole of London, charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 33rd of 42 forces on that measure. Across the force, about 53% of cases are closed with no suspect identified. A stolen phone in Camden Town gets a crime number, and the odds of getting the phone back are worse than the odds of finding the thief in the crowd.

It is worth walking the route from any flat you are considering to Camden Road station or the high street on a Saturday evening, since the busiest stretches and the quieter back streets can feel very different at that hour.

Camden Town is a poor bet on safety: crime runs well above an already busy borough, though most of what happens here targets pockets and bags far more than people.
