What are the schools like in Cam?

For anyone buying or renting in Cam.

The schools are one of Cam's real strengths. Four primaries carry the village's own name. Close to nine in ten graded schools in the county are good or better. Primary school is usually a short walk away, and secondary is a longer walk that starts to look like a lift. For a place this size, the choice runs well past what most parents expect.

Across Gloucestershire, Ofsted has graded 136 of 156 schools good or better, which is close to nine in ten. Nine of them are outstanding, 19 require improvement and one is inadequate. A further 95 settings in the county have no published grade yet, which means they have not been graded at all. It says nothing either way about their quality. These are county-wide counts, so they describe the system Cam's children go through, and they say nothing about any one school gate in the village.

The names locals use are Cam Everlands Primary School, Cam Hopton Church of England Primary School, and Woodfield, which is split into Cam Woodfield Infant School and Cam Woodfield Junior School. The village offers these as alternatives. Places at all of them are allocated under the county council's published admissions rules, so living near a school gate does not secure a place. Read Gloucestershire's rules for the school you want, including any faith criteria for the Church of England option, and check how far its last offers reached in recent years. The Department for Transport's modelled times from 2019 put the average walk to a primary at about 14 minutes. Parents choosing between four schools with "Cam" on the sign are still choosing within one village.

For secondary, the name that comes up is Rednock School, and Peak Academy also appears among the schools serving the area. The secondary walk is a different story from the primary one. The same 2019 modelling puts it at about 37 minutes on foot, about 20 by public transport and about 11 by car. The quarter-hour stroll to primary turns into a proper hike at eleven, and plenty of families find the car keys come out again.

Cam does well on schools: a strong county record with only a handful of weak grades, and a choice of primaries most villages would envy. The one cost comes at eleven, when the walk to school gets a lot longer.
