The countryside around Buntingford is excellent, and most front doors are a short walk from it. Green space is close to almost every home. The River Rib and its streams are never far away. The high street has more pubs than restaurants, as it did when this was a coaching town, and most houses come with a decent garden.
The average home in Buntingford is about 130 metres from green space, with about 16 separate green spaces within a kilometre. That is a short walk from almost anywhere in town.
Water is close too. The average home is about 190 metres from water, and about 46 bodies of water are within a kilometre. The River Rib runs past the town, and the town's name comes from the ford where people crossed it.
The rated-premises count gives the town 53 shops, 15 pubs and 4 restaurants. Buntingford grew up feeding and housing travellers on the road between London and Cambridge, and with fifteen pubs to four restaurants, the drinking side of that business has lasted better than the dining side.
Across East Hertfordshire, fine-particle air pollution averaged about 7.2 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024.
Outside the town the land is farmland and small villages. Westmill lies in the Rib valley to the south, the three Pelhams spread east towards the Essex border, and smaller places such as Hare Street, Little Hormead, Throcking and Wyddial are scattered between them. Wyddial is on the Prime Meridian. The fields hold a moated manor site at Moor Hall near Moor Green, another moated site called The Island near Flanders Green, and a bowl barrow on Bummers Hill. The site of St Giles' Church and its medieval village, north-east of Wakeley Farm, is a scheduled monument because the village was abandoned. South-east of Stocking Pelham there is also a major National Grid substation.
Private gardens are generous. Across Buntingford's six neighbourhoods there are about 175,000 square metres of garden for every 1,000 residents. Most households have outdoor space of their own as well as the fields nearby.
The business rates list records 233 rateable premises. The three biggest groups are 51 industrial premises, 49 shop premises and 45 offices. These count premises on the valuation list, which includes empty units as well as occupied ones, so the list shows a town that still makes and stores things as well as selling them.
Of the 35 food premises with a hygiene rating, about 74% hold the top score of five and about 3% are rated low. Hare Street House, between Buntingford and Great Hormead, was the country retreat of Arthur Hinsley, Archbishop of Westminster, so the surroundings have been good enough for at least one archbishop.
No protected landscape overlaps the area. There is no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest and no ancient woodland. This is ordinary Hertfordshire farmland, river valleys and footpaths, and nobody has given it a special designation. You can still walk out of most front doors and be among fields within a few minutes.
The surroundings are one of Buntingford's real strengths: green space and water close to almost every home, private gardens, and open countryside within an easy walk.
