Is Bruton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bruton.

Bruton is safe, and the numbers are not close about it. Recorded crime across the wider area runs around 45% below the county average. Fewer than 600 offences in a whole year. The largest category on the list is the largest category almost everywhere in England. The honest summary is that very little happens here, and the main thing worth thinking about is what does not get followed up when it does.

Police.uk recorded 579 crimes across the Bruton area in the year to May 2026, which works out at a published rate of about 51 crimes per 1,000 people, roughly 45% below the Somerset authority average. That rate is calculated on statistical-area populations rather than by dividing the year's offences by the headcount of residents, so it is not a sum anyone should try to reproduce at home.

The comparison is worth seeing in full rather than as an adjective. Somerset as a whole records about 93 crimes per 1,000 people. The Bruton area records about 51. Same measure, same twelve months, and a gap that no amount of local anecdote closes.

The texture around those figures is what you would find in most of rural Somerset. Population density averages about 795 people per square kilometre across the area. Unemployment sits at about 2%. Around 1% of households count as overcrowded, which in housing terms is close to none. None of that causes anything by itself, but it describes the kind of place producing the numbers: spread out, working, and not under pressure.

The mix matters more than the total. Violence and sexual offences account for about 40% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales, which is a close margin and needs reading properly: it is a broad statutory grouping that includes common assault without injury, and it heads the list in almost every place in the country. Other theft runs at about 13% locally against about 7% nationally. Burglary sits at about 9% against about 4%. Anti-social behaviour goes the other way, at about 12% here against about 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson at about 8%, and public order at about 8%, both sit close to their national shares. Rural does not mean untouched. It means the categories about things being taken run above the national shares while the category about noise on the street runs below it.

What follows a report is a separate question, and a less flattering one. Avon and Somerset Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, placing it 24th of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. About 30% of cases close with nobody identified at all. Those are force-wide outcomes covering every town the force polices, so they carry no signal about any particular street in Bruton. They also answer a different question from the crime rate: not how likely something is to happen to you, but how much happens afterwards. Reporting a crime and someone answering for it are two separate projects.

If one thing on Bruton's record is genuinely first-rate, this is it. The town is measurably quiet by any comparison the published data allows, and the realistic precaution here involves locking an outbuilding rather than avoiding a walk home.
