Is Brentwood, Essex a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Brentwood, Essex.

Brentwood is reasonably safe, and a bit busier with crime than the borough around it. The rate runs above the borough average. Violence is no more common than anywhere else. Shoplifting and car crime are well above the national pattern. If you live here, the thing most at risk is what you leave in the car.

In the year to May 2026, police.uk recorded 4,875 crimes in Brentwood, a published rate of about 86 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 12% above the average for Brentwood borough as a whole. The town is where the borough's shops, station and nightlife are, so it carries a bigger share of the borough's crime than the villages around it.

Put the two numbers side by side and the gap looks smaller. The borough rate over the same year is about 76 per 1,000, against Brentwood's 86. Hutton Mount and Mountnessing are in the same borough and pull its average down. Comparing a town centre with its own countryside will always flatter the countryside.

The town is fairly built up, at about 4,900 people per square kilometre on average, but it is not under strain. Unemployment is under 3% and overcrowding under 4% of households. These describe the kind of place the crime happens in, comfortable and busy, and they explain nothing about who commits it.

The mix is where Brentwood shows its own pattern. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes assault without injury, make up 33% of recorded crime against 35% nationally, so slightly below the usual share. Shoplifting is 15% against 8% nationally, and vehicle crime 10% against 5%. Anti-social behaviour, at 9% against 16% nationally, is well below. Criminal damage and other theft are close to the national shares, at about 7% and 6%. Brentwood's best-known villain is still Thomas Munn, a "gentleman brickmaker" hanged for robbing the Yarmouth mail and hung in chains at Gallows Corner. Today's offenders mostly go for the High Street shops and the cars on the driveway, which is a step down in ambition.

Charging decisions are made across the whole force. Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 28th of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 37% of its cases close with no suspect identified. None of this tells you how safe Brentwood is. It tells you what happens after a crime is reported. For the street you are looking at, the police.uk map shows recent crimes plotted close to where they happened, and it is worth checking against the town average.

Brentwood is middling on safety. Personal violence is no more common than average, and the extra crime mostly targets shop stock and parked cars.
