Bodmin

Cornwall's ex-capital, and still not over it·Cornwall·South West England

Bodmin spent three centuries being the place Cornwall came to when it wanted to rebel, riot, or be hanged, and now it is the place Cornwall drives past on the way to somewhere with a beach. The A30 did to it what the coach road did for it, in reverse. What's left is a working town that has stopped auditioning: a granite church too big for the congregation, a gaol that makes its money frightening tourists, and a moor at the back that will happily kill you if you set off in the wrong shoes. Nobody moves here for the postcard, which is precisely why the people who move here tend to stay.
