The schools around Bishop's Cleeve are good. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are rated good or better. The village has two primaries and a secondary of its own. The neighbouring villages each have a primary too. Most children here can walk to school, and their parents hardly notice how unusual that is.
Ofsted has graded 156 schools across Gloucestershire, and 136 of them are good or outstanding, close to nine in every ten. Nine are outstanding, 19 require improvement and one is inadequate. Another 95 settings have no published grade yet, and they aren't counted either way. Those are county-wide numbers, covering every school from the Forest of Dean side to the Cotswold edge. Bishop's Cleeve is one corner of that.
Gloucestershire County Council allocates places using its published admissions rules, so living near a particular school doesn't secure a place there, even when you can see it from your front window. Village schools are what bring families here in the first place. The parents who check the admissions rules first are the ones who don't get a shock when the offers come out.
Bishops Cleeve Primary Academy was built in 1965. That makes it older than most of the houses whose children it now teaches, since most of the village went up in the decades that followed. Grangefield Primary School is the village's other primary. Cleeve School is the secondary, an academy in the south-east of the village, so most teenagers here don't need a bus. Woodmancote School and Gotherington Primary School serve the villages either side. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest primary about 13 minutes' walk from the average home and the nearest secondary about 19 minutes. The model is a few years old, but schools don't tend to move.
The county sets the admission rules for each school, and they can change from year to year. For any house you're serious about, look up how far from the gate the last child offered a place at your preferred primary lived. Gloucestershire County Council publishes those distances. Don't rely on the seller's account of where the catchment ends.
Schools are one of the real strengths here. Most families can walk to a primary and a secondary, and the county record behind them is mostly good.
