What are the schools like in Billericay?

For anyone buying or renting in Billericay.

Billericay's schools are good, and the county they sit in is better than its reputation. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across Essex are good or outstanding. The town has two state secondaries, an independent school, and a ring of primaries. Getting a place is decided by the council's rules, and living nearby doesn't settle it.

On the primary side, only one mainstream state primary in the area has published results, and its average Key Stage 2 maths score is 105. One school is a thin base, so that figure describes one set of results and can't stand in for the town. The primaries in and around Billericay include Sunnymede, Buttsbury, Brightside and the South Green infant and junior schools, and St Peter's Catholic Primary School adds a faith option. Several of them take their names from the neighbourhoods the town grew into, and the school run tends to follow the same map.

Ofsted has graded 246 schools and settings across Essex, and 218 of them are good or outstanding, close to nine in ten. Of those, 22 are outstanding. Another 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. A further 238 Essex settings have no published grade yet, and that says nothing about them either way. All of these are county-wide counts, so they describe the system Billericay belongs to, and a single school can do better or worse.

Places go by Essex County Council's published admissions rules, and the oversubscription criteria matter more than the distance on the map. A faith school such as St Peter's Catholic Primary School usually ranks applicants by its own criteria, and a family that assumes the nearest school is theirs can end up with an offer they didn't expect. Read the admissions criteria for the specific schools you want, with your exact address, before the house becomes the plan.

At secondary level there are two comprehensives, Mayflower High School and The Billericay School, so most families end up planning around one of them, whether they meant to or not. The Billericay School stands on high ground just south of the High Street, where excavations found evidence of an abandoned Roman town, so its pupils are not the first people to have a bad morning on that hill. St John's School, an independent school for children up to 18, is the other option, for families whose budget has already survived the house price.

Schools are one of Billericay's real strengths. The county is strong, the choice is clear, and the main thing that can go wrong is the admissions process, not the classroom.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
