Is Billericay a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Billericay.

Yes. Billericay is one of the safest places in its borough by a wide margin. Recorded crime runs at about half the borough's rate. Unemployment is low and homes are rarely crowded. The crime the town does record is mostly the everyday kind, with one category a little over-represented.

Police figures for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 put Billericay's published crime rate at about 48 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 53% below the average for its local authority. That covers 1,759 recorded crimes over the twelve months. The rate is calculated on a statistical population of its own, which is why it is published as a rate and not worked out from the count.

Across the Borough of Basildon, the rate over the same year was about 101 per 1,000, against Billericay's 48. Whatever lifts the borough's number, most of it happens somewhere other than Billericay.

Billericay averages about 4,200 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods, a commuter town's density, not a city centre's. Census 2021 put unemployment at about 2%, and only about 2% of households are overcrowded. Those numbers describe the kind of place this is, settled and well housed, and they sit next to the crime rate without explaining it.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 38% of recorded crime here, close to the 35% share across England and Wales. That is the largest category almost everywhere, and it includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Shoplifting is the one that stands out, at about 14% of recorded crime here against 8% nationally. Anti-social behaviour runs the other way, at about 10% against 16% across the country. Vehicle crime is about 6% against 5%, criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%, and public order offences about 6% against 7%. Billericay complains about its neighbours less often than the country does and loses more from its shops. If one road matters to you, look at the police street-level map for that road over a full year, because a town-wide rate can't show which side of the High Street a crime happened on.

Once a crime is reported, the figures cover Essex Police as a whole, not Billericay on its own. The force charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 28th of 42 forces. In about 37% of cases the investigation closed with nobody identified. That measures what happens after a report across the whole county, and says nothing about how likely a crime is in Billericay in the first place.

Billericay is a low-crime town by its own published figures, and safety is the easiest part of deciding whether to move here. Expect about half the crime of the borough around it, and keep an eye on the shops more than the streets.
