What are the schools like in Bexleyheath?

For anyone buying or renting in Bexleyheath.

Bexleyheath's schools are good, and the borough's inspection record backs that up firmly. Most graded schools around here are rated good or better. A handful are outstanding. Only one is in real trouble. For parents, schools are the easy part of a move to Bexleyheath.

There are two mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged about 106 in the end-of-primary maths test. One is Crook Log Primary School, named after the stretch of Watling Street on the town's western edge where Bexleyheath runs into Welling with no obvious join. The other is Gravel Hill Primary School. With only two schools behind it, that average describes those two schools well and the wider town only loosely.

The four mainstream state secondaries in the area averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 57, weighted by pupil numbers. They are Townley Grammar School, St Catherine's Catholic School, St Columba's Catholic Boys' School and Lift Bexleyheath. Because one of the four is a grammar school, that 57 blends a selective intake with non-selective ones, so it flatters some of the schools and undersells others. Parents comparing them should look up each school's own result.

Across the London Borough of Bexley, Ofsted has graded 30 of 36 schools good or better, roughly five in every six. Five of those are outstanding, five require improvement and one is rated inadequate. A further 39 settings in the borough have no published grade yet. They are unknowns, which is a different thing from being poor, and they are left out of those counts.

Living near a school does not get your child a place there. Bexley Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and a grammar or a faith school can set criteria of its own on top. So read the current rules for the specific school you want, including how it ranks distance, and check them against the house you are looking at while you can still walk away from the purchase. Families who assume the school at the end of the road comes with the house tend to find out otherwise on allocation day.

Schools are among Bexleyheath's best features. The worry for parents here is which good school their child gets into, and finding a good school at all is the easy bit.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
