What are the schools like in Bethnal Green?

For anyone buying or renting in Bethnal Green.

Bethnal Green's schools are very good, one of the few things here a buyer gets without a fight. Nearly every graded school in the borough is rated good or outstanding. Only two are judged to need improvement. None is inadequate. A primary is about four minutes' walk from most homes.

Ofsted has graded 39 settings across Tower Hamlets, and 37 of them are good or better, which leaves only two out. Thirteen of those are outstanding and 24 are good. The two that require improvement are the only blemishes, and no school in the borough is rated inadequate. Another 44 settings have no published grade yet, because they haven't been inspected under the current framework or are too new, and they count neither for nor against the picture. In Tower Hamlets, boasting about a good school is like boasting that the bus turned up.

Those are borough-wide counts, and Tower Hamlets allocates places by its published admissions rules. Living close to a school helps, but it doesn't secure a place, and an oversubscribed school can be full before your street comes into it. For a particular school, the council can tell you how places were allocated last year, which is more useful than any distance on a map. The area this page covers stretches into Haggerston and Hoxton, which are in Hackney, so Tower Hamlets' Ofsted counts don't cover those streets, and Hackney's admissions rules apply there instead.

Schools are close together here. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about four minutes' walk from the average home and the nearest secondary about six. St John's Church of England Primary School shares its dedication with the listed Church of St John on Bethnal Green. Globe Primary School takes its name from Globe Town, just to the east. Morpeth School is the local secondary in Tower Hamlets, and Haggerston School serves the Hackney side under Hackney's rules. Bonner, Columbia, Hague, Mowlem and William Davis primaries are among the others nearby. Here the difference between two schools is usually a few minutes' walk.

Schools are where Bethnal Green is strongest. Parents moving in get a borough where a weak school is the exception, and the hard part is getting a place, not finding a good school.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
