Who lives in Banbury?

For anyone buying or renting in Banbury.

Banbury is a town of working families in their thirties and forties, with a bigger renting population than a market town usually admits to. Just over half own their home. About four in ten rent. The typical resident is in their late thirties. It's a town with a mortgage, a car payment and a school run.

About 56% of Banbury's households own their home. About 24% rent privately, and about 19% rent from the council or a housing association. Nearly one household in five in social housing is a lot for a market town, and it goes back to the estates built after the war to house a fast-growing population. The town's private landlords have the next quarter of the market.

The 2021 census, which is the source for every population figure here, puts the median age at 38. About 31% of residents are aged 25 to 44, the years of first homes, young children and long commutes. This is a town that's mid-career.

Modelled gross household income, before tax, averaged about £56,000 in the financial year to March 2023. That's a modelled figure for the town as a whole, averaged across its eight middle-sized statistical areas, so it smooths over very different streets. The households on Hanwell Fields and the households in the town-centre flats aren't on the same income. They just share one average.

Banbury has 21,916 households and a population of about 52,800. About 30% of households are one person living alone, and about 11% are a pensioner living alone, which is part of the same group. About 20% are couples with dependent children, and about 11% are lone parents. That's a broad mix: plenty of families, plenty of people living on their own, and fewer of the retired couples that dominate the villages around it.

About 28% of adults hold a degree, and about 21% have no formal qualifications. Full-time students make up about 2% of residents. Oxford is Oxfordshire's other big centre, and it has taken the students and the colleges. Banbury has the people who went to work instead.

Banbury's population is ordinary in the useful sense of the word. It's a town of working households at the middle of everything, from income and age to education, with no strong lean in any direction and nobody putting on airs.
