Abbey Wood's schools are a strength, and the primaries do most of the work. There are five state primaries around here. Their maths results are solid. Nearly every school Ofsted has graded across the wider borough comes out good or better. The secondary picture is thinner and needs more thought.
The five mainstream state primaries in the area averaged a score of about 107 in the Key Stage 2 maths tests. They include De Lucy, Alexander McLeod, Boxgrove, Willow Bank and St Thomas A Becket, a Roman Catholic primary. On the Department for Transport's modelled times from 2019, the nearest primary is about a seven-minute walk from the average home. For most families the morning walk to primary school takes less time than finding a matching pair of shoes.
The area has one mainstream state secondary with published results, and its pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 40. St Paul's Academy, a Roman Catholic secondary, moved onto the site of the old Abbey Wood comprehensive when it became an academy. The school that used to have the area's name has gone, and a school without the name now stands where it was. The nearest secondary is about a fifteen-minute walk on the same 2019 modelling. With one secondary on the doorstep, choosing a secondary school here usually means looking at the neighbours' schools too.
Across the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Ofsted has graded 37 of 40 inspected settings good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Eleven are rated outstanding, three require improvement and none is inadequate. The borough also has settings with no published grade yet, and those are counted in neither group. The council runs admissions to most of these schools under its published rules, so buying a house near a school you like does not get your child a place there. Faith schools such as St Paul's and St Thomas A Becket set their own criteria, so read each school's admissions policy for the year you would apply. Faith criteria are a common reason families who live near one of those schools still don't get a place.
Abbey Wood's schools are one of the area's clear strengths: good primaries within a short walk, in a borough where nearly every graded school is good or better. Expect to think harder about the secondary choice than about the primary one.
