Is Abbey Wood a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Abbey Wood.

Abbey Wood is somewhat safer than the borough around it. Its crime rate is a little below the Greenwich average. The biggest category, violence, makes up a smaller share here than nationally. Anti-social behaviour and car crime make up larger shares. People here face less risk than the borough figure suggests, and parked cars face more.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 4,470 crimes in Abbey Wood in the twelve months to May 2026, a published rate of about 109 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 8% below the average for the Royal Borough of Greenwich over the same period.

Greenwich as a whole runs at about 118 crimes per 1,000 residents against Abbey Wood's 109. The gap is real but modest. It makes Abbey Wood one of the calmer parts of the borough, though by a margin a single busy summer could close.

Abbey Wood is densely built, at about 9,350 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. About 5% of working-age residents were unemployed at the 2021 Census, and about 13% of households were overcrowded. These figures describe the kind of area the crime numbers come from, and none of them explains those numbers. Despite all three, the crime rate still comes in below the borough's.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 29% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category covers a wide legal range down to common assault with no injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 24% here against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 11% against 5%. Drugs offences account for about 6% against 4% nationally. Other theft and criminal damage both sit at about 6%, a little under their national shares of 7%. The car is in more danger here than its owner. If you will be parking on the street, look at the Metropolitan Police's published crime map for the roads around the actual address.

The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases across London, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases are closed without anyone identified as a suspect. Those are figures for the whole force, covering the twelve months to May 2026. They describe what happens after a crime is reported, and they say nothing about how often crime happens in Abbey Wood.

Abbey Wood is safer than most of its borough. The risk falls mainly on cars and on people's patience, and much less on people.
