Most of the people in Yorkley and Whitecroft are homeowners in middle age or older, who bought and stayed. Eight in ten own their home. Private renters are hard to find. The typical resident is past fifty. Adults in their twenties and thirties are a small minority, and young families are scarce.
About 80% of households own their home, about 7% rent privately and about 12% rent from a social landlord. With so few homes let privately, a would-be tenant may wait a long time for anything to come up.
The typical resident is 51, and people aged 25 to 44 make up only about 19% of the population. The village's age profile is set by people who arrived some time ago and have no plans to leave.
The Office for National Statistics models typical gross household income for the wider surrounding area at about £51,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That figure is an average across a larger patch than the two villages, and it is a modelled estimate, not a pay slip. The mortgage is paid out of what is left after tax, so the gross number makes a household sound better off than it feels at the end of the month.
At the 2021 census, which is the source for every population figure here, 2,820 people lived in 1,197 households.
About 23% of those households are one person living alone, and about 13% are a pensioner living alone, a group that falls within the 23% and is not extra to it. Couples with children make up about 18% of households and lone parents about 9%. With more pensioners living alone than lone parents, older people are the bigger part of village life.
About 28% of residents hold a degree-level qualification and about 19% have no qualifications. Full-time students are about 1%, a share that barely registers. Yorkley built itself a working men's institute in 1892, and the founders might take some satisfaction from how many of their successors went on to study.
The people here are stable and mostly own their homes, but the village has few young families and a population that keeps getting older. That makes the community one of Yorkley and Whitecroft's weaker points.
