What are the schools like in Yorkley and Whitecroft?

For anyone buying or renting in Yorkley and Whitecroft.

Schools are one of the best things about Yorkley and Whitecroft. The county's record is strong. Nearly nine in ten graded schools are good or better. The village has a primary of its own and several more close by. Primary school is a short walk, and getting to secondary school means a car or a bus.

Ofsted has graded 156 schools across Gloucestershire, and 136 of them are good or outstanding, which is nearly nine in ten. Nine hold the top grade, 19 require improvement and one is inadequate. These are county-wide figures, so they describe the system your child will be in, not any one school near the house. Another 95 Gloucestershire settings have no published grade yet. They are unscored, which says nothing either way about how good they are.

Yorkley Primary School is the one that carries the village's name, and Pillowell Community Primary School and Parkend Primary School are both in the next villages. Gloucestershire County Council allocates places by its published admissions rules, so living within sight of any of them does not secure a place, and a family should read the rules for the school they want early on. Further out are Bream Church of England Primary School, Blakeney Primary School and a handful of others in Lydney and the villages around it. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about a ten-minute walk away, or seven minutes by car.

The Dean Academy is the secondary school for the area, and the jump in distance is large. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 15 minutes away by car and about 29 by public transport. On foot it takes over an hour. Those public transport times come from timetables that were six years old by the time the latest admissions round came around. For a family with an older child, the one thing to check is the county council's school transport rules for the Forest villages, because the bus decides more about secondary school here than the house does. A ten-minute walk at primary becomes an hour on foot at secondary, so the car takes over somewhere around the end of Year 6.

One nearby school has closed, so check that any school an older guide or a neighbour mentions is still open.

Families get good schools near Yorkley and Whitecroft. The primary is on the doorstep, the county grades well, and the price is the drive to secondary.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
