Is Wootton (Isle of Wight) a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wootton (Isle of Wight).

Yes, safer than the island around it. Crime runs below the Isle of Wight average. Unemployment barely registers. Almost nobody lives in an overcrowded home. The bigger concern is what happens after you report something.

Police.uk published a crime rate for Wootton of about 75 per 1,000 residents over the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026, from 367 recorded crimes. That's roughly 9% below the Isle of Wight average. It's a published rate, calculated on its own population base.

The island-wide figure for the same period is about 83 crimes per 1,000 residents, so the gap is roughly 75 against 83. Wootton isn't untouched by crime, and nobody should sell it as a place where the doors stay unlocked. It's a village that runs a little quieter than the island average.

The surrounding figures fit that. Population density averages about 2,420 people per square kilometre across Wootton's neighbourhood areas, unemployment is around 2% and overcrowding is about 1%. These numbers describe a settled, uncrowded place where most people own their homes and stay put. They don't explain the crime rate. They describe the kind of place the rate comes from.

The mix needs a warning first: at 367 incidents a year, a handful of cases can move any category by several points, so treat these shares as a snapshot rather than a fixed feature of the village. Violence and sexual offences was the largest category, at about 46% of recorded crime against about 35% nationally. That's the one clear gap. The category is broad in law and includes common assault without injury, so the label sounds worse than much of what it covers. Anti-social behaviour was about 9% of the local total against about 16% nationally, well below the national share. Shoplifting at about 9% (8% nationally), public order at about 8% (7%), other theft at about 8% (7%) and criminal damage and arson at about 7% (7%) all sit close to the national pattern.

Hampshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and in the same twelve months about 35% of cases closed with no suspect identified. That puts the force 38th of 42. These are force-wide figures covering a huge area and say nothing about Wootton's own streets. They also answer a different question from the crime rate: how often a report leads to a charge, not how likely you are to need to make one. If something does happen, the odds of a charge are lower than the national average, and that's the force's shortfall, not the village's.

Wootton is one of the safer places on the island, with crime below the local average and little day-to-day disorder. The weak link is the force's charge rate, which affects what happens after a crime is reported, not how often crime happens here.
