Is Wokingham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wokingham.

Yes, about as safe as the borough around it, and that borough is a comfortable place to start from. Crime runs level with the local average, give or take a sliver. Anti-social behaviour makes up less of the total than it does nationally. Shoplifting is the one category that pokes its head up. The less comfortable number is what happens after someone calls it in.

Thames Valley Police published a rate of about 49 recorded crimes per 1,000 residents for Wokingham in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, from 2,953 recorded crimes over those twelve months. That sits roughly 3% above the average for the Wokingham local authority. A gap that size is the sort of thing a council press release would call "broadly in line" and a nervous buyer would call "above average", and both would be describing the same decimal.

Set side by side, the Wokingham local authority rate over the same year was about 48 per 1,000, against the town's 49. Anyone who reads "above the borough average" and pictures a problem town should look at the two numbers together and relax.

The neighbourhoods behind those figures are settled ones. The town averages about 3,650 people per square kilometre, a proper built-up density rather than scattered villages. Unemployment stands at about 2% and overcrowding at about 2% of households. That is the texture of a comfortably employed commuter town with room to spare, and the crime figures look like it.

The mix of crime tracks the national pattern closely. Violence and sexual offences make up about 37% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales, and that heading is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, so it sits at the top almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour is about 13% of the local total against about 16% nationally, which is the kind of undershoot a town full of homeowners with neighbourhood group chats tends to produce. Shoplifting is about 11% against about 8% nationally, and other theft about 8% against about 7%. Criminal damage and arson, at about 7%, and public order offences, at about 7%, both sit level with the national shares.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and it belongs to the force rather than the town. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, which puts it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of cases close with no suspect identified at all. None of that makes Wokingham less safe to walk around; it does mean the honest answer to "will they catch whoever did it" is less encouraging than the house prices would lead a buyer to expect.

On crime, Wokingham is ordinary for its borough: neither a worry nor a selling point, with a detection record that is the force's problem to fix rather than the town's.
