What are the schools like in Wixams?

For anyone buying or renting in Wixams.

The schools are the easy part of moving to Wixams. The town built its own primaries and its own secondary instead of borrowing someone else's. Nearly every graded school in the wider borough is good or better. The nearest primary is about ten minutes' walk from the typical front door. A secondary is the bit that still means a bus or a lift.

Across Bedford Borough, Ofsted has graded 39 schools and settings, and 36 of them are good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Two are outstanding, three require improvement and none is inadequate. Another 24 have no published grade yet, mostly because they are new or have not been inspected under the current system, and nothing about them should be read either way.

Wixams has three schools of its own: Lakeview School, Wixams Tree Primary Academy and Wixams Academy, the town's secondary. Lakeview came first, in September 2009, as a lower school. It later dropped the word "lower" when Bedford Borough Council moved from three tiers of schooling to two, which makes it one of the few institutions in Wixams that has already had a rebrand. Wixams Academy and Wixams Tree Primary opened side by side in September 2017. Families who arrived in the first wave with children about to start secondary did the out-of-town run that today's eleven-year-olds skip. Willow Grove Primary School carries the name of the second village, and Wilstead Primary School and Elstow School are the older options just over the fields.

Living next door to any of these does not secure a place. Bedford Borough Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and on a site that is still adding streets, the order in which those rules are applied matters more than the walk to the gate. This is the one check worth making: ask the council's admissions team how the phase you are buying into is treated for Wixams Academy and the nearest primary. A house on a road finished last year can sit under different arrangements from one finished in 2010, and the sales office's map will not show it.

The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 11 minutes' walk from the typical home, or about 10 minutes by public transport. A secondary is about 37 minutes on foot, 20 by public transport and 11 by car. Wixams Academy opening within the town shortened that run for a lot of families, and the bus figures are the ones most likely to have changed since 2019. In 2012 the Countess of Wessex came to unveil a plaque at Lakeview School, and that is still the closest the school run here has come to a traffic jam worth reporting.

School is one of the things Wixams has properly sorted. The town planned its classrooms early, and the borough around it grades almost uniformly well.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
