Witney is home to working-age owner-occupiers, most of them in their forties and fifties. About two in three own their home. The typical resident is in their early forties. A third of adults have a degree. The town is mostly people with mortgages and jobs, and its quiet evenings reflect that.
At the 2021 Census, which supplies every population figure on this page, about 63% of Witney's households owned their home. About 17% rented from a private landlord and about 16% from a council or housing association, so the town's renters are split almost evenly between the two. Owners make up most of every street, and among renters, the social and private sectors are almost the same size.
The typical Witney resident is 42, and about 27% of residents are aged 25 to 44. The town is neither young nor retired. Most residents are people with two decades of work behind them and two more ahead.
The Office for National Statistics models median household income in Witney at about £61,800 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023, averaged across the town's four middle-sized statistical areas. Gross pay looks larger than what reaches the bank account, and it has had three years of price rises to cope with since.
About 30% of households are one person living alone, and about 14% of all households are pensioners living alone, as part of that group. Couples with children make up about 20% of households and lone parents about 10%. The rest are mostly couples without dependent children at home, either before children or after they have left. That mix fills a town of semis and three-bedroom houses with families and with couples whose children have grown up.
About 35% of Witney's adults have a degree, and about 15% have no formal qualifications. Only about 2% of residents are full-time students. Witney's further education college now carries Abingdon's name ahead of its own, and that is as close as the town comes to a student scene.
Witney's residents are a solid, well-off group: mostly owners, mostly working, comfortably paid and settled in.
