What are the schools like in Winnersh?

For anyone buying or renting in Winnersh.

The schools around Winnersh are good, and it's hard to find one that isn't. Nearly every graded school in the borough is good or better. None is failing. Primary and secondary schools are both a short walk away. The worry here is whether you get the school you want, not whether the schools are any good.

Ofsted has published an overall grade for 24 schools and early-years settings in the Wokingham local authority, and 22 of them are good or outstanding. That's more than nine in ten, and the figure covers the whole borough, not Winnersh alone. Four hold an outstanding grade. Two are rated requires improvement, and none is inadequate. A further 38 settings hold no published grade yet, which tells you nothing either way and shouldn't be read as a warning. In most places a parent is hoping to avoid the weak school. Here the weak option barely exists, so the effort goes into choosing between good ones.

The local primary schools start with the one that carries the name, Winnersh Primary School, with Wheatfield Primary School and Nursery and Bearwood Primary School also serving the area. For secondary, The Forest School is the one on the doorstep, an all-boys school dating from 1957, which settles one question for parents of daughters before they've visited. The Emmbrook School and The Holt School are also on the local register, and Emmbrook has infant and junior schools of its own for families on that side. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary and secondary schools at about 12 and 13 minutes' walk respectively. That's the best part of the school run: short, unless it's raining.

Living next to a school doesn't guarantee a place in it. Admissions follow the council's and each school's own published criteria, and the rules for a popular school can be tighter than the estate agent makes them sound. Check the admissions arrangements for the specific school and year you need before you buy, not after the offer letter arrives. A house bought for its catchment is only worth that to you once the place is confirmed.

Schools are one of Winnersh's real strengths. The choice here is between good and very good, a problem most parents elsewhere would be glad to have.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
