What are the schools like in Wickham Bishops?

For anyone buying or renting in Wickham Bishops.

The schools around Wickham Bishops are good, and the village gets them by borrowing from its neighbours. Nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The nearby primaries post strong maths results. Secondary school means a car or a bus. The quality is there, but the address on the front gate is always somewhere else.

Around here there are 5 mainstream state primaries, and their pupils average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 106. That is an average across the five rather than a figure for any one school, and the gap between the best and the rest will not show in it. The names in the area include Great Totham Primary School and Chipping Hill Primary School, with others spread across the villages towards Witham and Maldon. The Department for Transport's modelled times, from 2019, put the nearest primary about 8 minutes away by car or about 20 on foot. A twenty-minute walk with a reception child and a book bag is a different journey from the twenty minutes the map shows.

Essex County Council's area has 246 schools with a published Ofsted grade, and 218 of them are good or outstanding, close to nine in ten. Of those, 22 are outstanding, while 23 require improvement and 5 are inadequate. Another 238 settings across the county have no published grade yet, which tells you nothing either way about how they are doing. A figure spread over the whole of Essex is a decent sign of the system the village draws from. It says much less about which classroom your own child ends up in.

Places are handed out under the council's published admissions rules, and living close to a school you like does not secure a seat in it, however short the drive. The useful check is the council's allocation record for the schools you have in mind, which shows how far from the gate the last child offered a place actually lived, and in a village spread out like this one that distance decides more than the Ofsted grade does. Plenty of parents here learn the rules properly only once the offer letter arrives.

Secondary school is where the car takes over. The modelled times put the nearest secondary about 14 minutes away by car, about 30 by public transport and about 65 on foot, the last of which no parent seriously plans around. The secondaries named in the area are Plume School, Lift Maltings and Lift New Rickstones. Maldon Court Preparatory School is also on the list for families going private. In this village, school choice is decided by the school run more than by any league table.

None of the schools on the area's list carries the name Wickham Bishops. Families here sign up to a decent menu of schools nearby, and what they are really choosing between is the routes.

Schools are one of the village's real strengths, as long as you accept that every one of them is a drive away. A good education is easy to find from here. A short walk to it is the part the village can't offer.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
