West Norwood's schools are among the best things about living there, and parents tend to move for them. More than eight in ten graded schools in the borough are rated good or better. Outstanding schools outnumber struggling ones by a wide margin. The nearest primary is a few minutes' walk from most homes. For a part of south London most people know for its cemetery, that's a better school list than many visitors expect.
Ofsted has graded 41 schools across Lambeth, and 35 of them, more than eight in ten, are rated good or outstanding. Eleven are outstanding, five require improvement and one is inadequate. Another 32 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, so they aren't counted either way. People who know Lambeth only by Brixton's reputation tend to expect a worse result than that.
On the Department for Transport's modelled figures from 2019, the nearest primary is about seven minutes' walk from the average home here and the nearest secondary about ten. Being that close helps less than it sounds. Lambeth allocates places using its published admissions rules, so living near a school does not secure a place there, and families who picked a house for the school sometimes find that out after they've moved. It's worth asking Lambeth how far from each school gate last year's places reached for the schools you care about. A short walk to school is one thing; getting a place at the one you want can take a lot longer.
St Luke's Church of England Primary School shares its name with the parish church. St Luke's was built in 1825 because the nearest parish church, St Leonard's in Streatham, was more than a mile away. Kingswood Primary School, Elm Wood School and Julian's School make up the rest of the local primary list. For secondary, The Elmgreen School is the local option, and plenty of families also look across the borough boundary. St Luke's got its church in 1825 because Streatham was too far to walk; parents walking to school today mostly don't have that problem.
The schools are one of West Norwood's real strengths. They're close, and most of them are well rated, though a family still has to win the place under Lambeth's rules.
