Is West Drayton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in West Drayton.

West Drayton is not a safe area on the published numbers. Recorded crime runs at roughly twice the rate of the rest of its borough. Anti-social behaviour and theft lead the list. Most reported crimes end with nobody identified. The trains are the part of town that runs on time.

Police.uk records put West Drayton at about 269 crimes per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, about 106% above the average for the London Borough of Hillingdon. Over those twelve months that came to 12,205 recorded crimes. Both are published figures, and the rate is worked out against a statistical population that is not the same as the census head count, so the two numbers should be read side by side and not divided into each other.

Across Hillingdon as a whole, the same records give about 131 crimes per 1,000 residents. Against West Drayton's 269, the borough's figure looks like a different place, and in a sense it is, because Hillingdon also takes in roads and villages far from the railway and the airport.

The town is dense and busy. The area averages about 8,600 residents per square kilometre, unemployment is about 5% and roughly 14% of households are overcrowded. That describes a crowded, working, renting town, and none of it explains the crime figures on its own. The area also runs from Yiewsley down to Sipson, Longford and Harmondsworth on the northern edge of Heathrow, with 300 offices and 212 shops on the business-rates list. A rate per resident charges every offence to the people who live here, including offences on premises where almost nobody sleeps.

The crime mix tilts away from the national pattern. Anti-social behaviour is the largest category at about 22% of recorded crime, against 16% across England and Wales. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, make up about 21%, well below the national 35%. Other theft accounts for about 13% against 7% nationally, and vehicle crime 7% against 5%. Public order offences are close to the national share, at about 5% against 7%. Then there is "other crime", the police.uk category for offences that fit none of the named headings, at about 14% here against 2% nationally. West Drayton's numbers are swollen by nuisance and theft far more than by violence, which matters a good deal to anyone pushing a buggy past the station after dark. Look up the exact street on police.uk across several months, since a busy parade and the road behind it can tell very different stories.

The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, putting it 33rd of 42 forces on that measure in the year to May 2026. That covers the whole force and tells you nothing particular about West Drayton's streets. About 53% of the force's cases closed with no suspect identified. Report a stolen bike and the likeliest outcome is a crime reference number for the insurer.

West Drayton has a crime record a buyer needs to look at squarely. It is the weakest thing about the town, and nothing on the timetable makes up for it.
