What are the schools like in West Brompton?

For anyone buying or renting in West Brompton.

The schools around West Brompton are very good. Nearly every graded school in the borough is good or better, and close to four in ten are outstanding. A primary is a few minutes' walk from most front doors and a secondary only a little further. In a neighbourhood where most other things cost a fortune, the schools are one of the few strong points that come free with the address.

Ofsted has graded 22 schools across Kensington and Chelsea, and 20 of them are good or outstanding, which leaves very little room at the bottom. Eight are outstanding and 12 good. One requires improvement and one is inadequate. Another 12 settings in the borough hold no published grade yet and aren't counted either way. A borough-wide tally tells you the standard the council keeps across its schools. It can't tell you which classroom your child ends up in.

The primaries nearest West Brompton include Ashburnham Community School and Park Walk Primary School, and the closest secondary is Chelsea Academy. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 5 minutes' walk from the average home and the nearest secondary about 13 minutes, or about 12 by public transport. Places at all of these are given out under the council's published admissions rules, and living round the corner from a school doesn't secure a place in it. Last year's allocations, set against those rules, will show whether a particular flat would have got in. Parents who skip that step find out in the spring. The secondary is called Chelsea Academy, and for many families here it's the most affordable thing in the area with Chelsea in its name.

Two schools that used to operate nearby have closed. Neither is an option, whatever an old search result says.

Schools are one of West Brompton's clear strengths: good teaching close to home, in a borough where poor ratings are rare.
