Is West Brompton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in West Brompton.

West Brompton is safer than the rest of its borough, and comfortably so. Its crime rate runs about a fifth below the Kensington and Chelsea average. Violence makes up a smaller share of incidents than it does nationally. Car crime makes up a bigger one. For a neighbourhood packed this tightly into west London, the trouble is mostly about property.

Recorded crime in West Brompton is published at about 148 crimes per 1,000 people for the year to May 2026, roughly 19% below the local-authority average. That year produced 3,407 recorded crimes. The published rate is calculated on the police's own statistical areas, so dividing the count by the number of residents won't reproduce it, however tempting the sum looks.

Kensington and Chelsea's own rate for the same year is about 183 crimes per 1,000 people. Next to that, West Brompton's 148 is the calmer end of a borough with a lot of nightlife and visitors. Being better than its borough average is the claim, and it holds.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is crowded, at roughly 19,000 people per square kilometre. About 4% of working-age residents are unemployed, and about 7% of households are overcrowded. That's dense inner-London living, and it explains why the place feels busy at all hours. None of it says who commits the crimes.

The mix points at belongings. Violence and sexual offences are the largest category at about 25% of recorded crime, against about 35% nationally, and the category includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour is about 19% here and 16% nationally, shoplifting about 10% against 8%, and other theft about 9% against 7%. Vehicle crime is the clearest gap, at about 10% of local crime against 5% nationally. Burglary is about 5% against 4%. In a neighbourhood made mostly of flats, the communal front door is the lock everyone depends on, so ask how it is managed and who holds keys.

The Metropolitan Police Service, which covers West Brompton, charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year to May 2026. That's a force-wide figure and has nothing to do with these streets in particular. About 53% of the force's cases closed with no suspect identified. On charge rates the Met ranks 33rd of 42 forces, so a report here is more likely to become a crime reference number than a court date.

West Brompton is one of the safer parts of an expensive, busy borough. Violence and sexual offences take a smaller share of crime here than they do nationally, and the bigger worries are your car and whatever is left in it.
