Is Teddington a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Teddington.

Yes, Teddington is a safe area, and safer than the borough around it. Recorded crime runs below the Richmond upon Thames rate. Violence is a smaller share of it than nationally. Unemployment and overcrowding are both low. The commonest complaint is somebody behaving badly in public, and very little of it comes to anything worse.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 1,827 crimes in Teddington in the year to May 2026, and the published rate for the area is about 61 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 18% below the Richmond upon Thames average. That rate is the published one for the area's statistical units, worked out on its own population base, so it will not match a sum done on a census headcount.

The borough's own rate over the same year was about 74 per 1,000, against Teddington's 61. Richmond upon Thames gets the rest of its average from other parts of the borough.

Teddington is built up for a suburb, at an average of about 7,620 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods, and the census puts unemployment at about 3% and overcrowded households at about 3%. Those figures describe a busy, comfortably-off, uncrowded place. They do not explain the crime rate, and they do not prove anything about it.

The mix is mostly at the mild end. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 25% of Teddington's recorded crime, against about 16% across England and Wales, which makes it the one category that stands out well above the national share. Violence and sexual offences make up about 24%, against about 35% nationally. That statutory heading includes common assault with no injury, and here it is a noticeably smaller slice than average. Other theft is about 8% against 7% nationally, shoplifting about 7% against 8%, vehicle crime about 7% against 5%, and public order offences about 6% against 7%. Most of those sit within a point or two of the national shares, and vehicle crime is the one worth a second look if the car lives on the street. The borough's drinkers and loiterers make up the biggest share of the complaints, and in Teddington they mostly get noted and moved on. Check the police.uk crime map for the specific street, especially near Broad Street and the station, since a town-wide rate smooths over the evening corners.

What happens after a report is a force-wide question, and Teddington has no answer of its own. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those figures measure the force's outcomes across London. They say nothing about how safe Teddington is, and they suggest that a good lock will do more for a car or a shed than waiting on the follow-up.

Safety is one of Teddington's strong points. Crime runs well under the borough rate and leans towards nuisance, and the only reasons to plan around it are the street-level detail and the odds of a charge.
