Is Surbiton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Surbiton.

Surbiton is safe enough, and almost exactly as safe as the rest of its borough. Crime runs just under the Kingston upon Thames average. Violence takes a smaller share than it does nationally. Vehicle crime takes a bigger one. In Surbiton, the parked car comes off worst.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 4,503 crimes in Surbiton in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate works out at about 88 crimes per 1,000 people, roughly 2% below the average for Kingston upon Thames. That's close enough to call the two level.

For the borough as a whole, the published figure over the same twelve months was about 90 crimes per 1,000 people. Surbiton's 88 and the borough's 90 differ by about as much as one busy weekend at the station. Buyers who pick Surbiton over the rest of Kingston for safety are choosing on a margin the police barely record.

Surbiton is a dense place. It packs in about 8,100 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 3% and about 5% of households are overcrowded. Low unemployment and low overcrowding are the profile of a settled commuter town, and the density comes from the flats that make up so much of its housing. None of these numbers explains the crime rate on its own. They describe the kind of town the rate comes from: busy, built up and mostly employed.

The mix of crime matters more than the total. Violence and sexual offences are the largest category in Surbiton at about 29% of recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category is the biggest almost everywhere, and it covers a broad legal range that includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 22% here against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 10% against 5%. Shoplifting, at about 7% against 8%, other theft at about 6% against 7%, and public order at about 6% against 7% all run close to the national pattern. The Cooper Car Company developed the Mini Cooper in a garage on Hollyfield Road in 1961. Surbiton's cars still attract attention, just of a less welcome kind. The police's own street-level crime map shows what's been reported close to any address on a shortlist, and parking is worth checking there.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is, and the answer comes from the whole force. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those figures cover the whole of London's force and say nothing about Surbiton's streets in particular. They do explain why a stolen catalytic converter tends to end as a crime reference number and a claim.

Safety in Surbiton is middling, level with the borough around it, with crime that damages cars and patience far more often than people.
