Is Stotfold a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Stotfold.

Stotfold is a safe place to live, and a calmer one than most of the council area it belongs to. Crime runs about a fifth below the local average. Unemployment is low. Overcrowding is rare. The crime that does get recorded looks much like the national pattern, with a little more nuisance in it.

Police records put Stotfold's published crime rate at about 52 offences for every 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026, with 719 crimes recorded over those twelve months. That rate is roughly 20% below the Central Bedfordshire average.

Set side by side, the two numbers are about 52 per 1,000 for Stotfold and about 65 per 1,000 across Central Bedfordshire as a whole. Somewhere in the council area is carrying that average upwards, and the figures point away from here.

The town is busier on the ground than its village reputation suggests. Stotfold averages about 3,930 residents per square kilometre, and at the 2021 census about 2% of residents were unemployed and about 2% of households were overcrowded. The estates pack in plenty of neighbours, and very few of them are short of work or short of room.

The mix of crime is mostly ordinary. Violence and sexual offences make up about 38% of what is recorded here, against about 35% across England and Wales; that category is the biggest almost everywhere and includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour is the one real difference, at about 22% locally against about 16% nationally. Other theft runs at about 8% against 7%, public order at about 7% against 7%, criminal damage and arson at about 6% against 7%, and vehicle crime at about 5% against 5%. The distinctive thing about Stotfold's crime is how much of it is annoyance, which leaves the people recording it busy and most residents unharmed. Because these patterns vary by street, the police's own street-level crime map for the exact postcode is worth ten minutes of anyone's evening.

What happens after a report is a force-wide question. Bedfordshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 36th of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 38% of cases across the force close with no suspect identified. Those figures describe Bedfordshire Police's work across the whole county once a crime has already happened, and they say nothing about how often one happens in Stotfold.

Safety is one of Stotfold's real strengths: the town records less crime than its council area, and what it does record is weighted towards nuisance over harm.
