Is Stanwell a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Stanwell.

Fairly safe, and a little rougher than the rest of its borough. Crime runs about a tenth above the Spelthorne average. The types of crime look much like the national mix. When someone is charged, it is about as often as anywhere else in England. Stanwell has an ordinary crime record that happens to be on the airport's doorstep.

Police records give Stanwell a published rate of about 101 crimes per 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026. That covers 1,320 recorded crimes over twelve months. The rate is roughly 11% above the average for Spelthorne. That rate is published using the population of the official statistical areas, so it will not match a sum done with the village's own population.

Put side by side, Stanwell's figure is about 101 per 1,000 and the borough's is about 91 over the same year. That is a gap of about ten crimes per thousand people. It is a noticeable gap, and a long way from a different kind of place.

Stanwell is fairly built up for Surrey. Its neighbourhoods average about 6,440 people per square kilometre. At the 2021 census, about 5% of working-age residents were unemployed and about 10% of households were overcrowded. That is typical of a town-edge suburb with lots of flats and social housing. None of those three figures explains the crime rate on its own, and none should be read as the cause of it.

The types of crime here follow the national pattern closely. Violence and sexual offences make up about 38% of recorded crime in Stanwell, against 35% across England and Wales. That category is a broad legal grouping, including common assault where nobody was hurt, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour is about 15%, against 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson is about 9% against 7%, public order about 8% against 7%, and other theft 7% against 7%. Vehicle crime is about 6% against 5%. A village beside an airport's cargo area might be expected to have a smuggling problem. On these figures, it mostly has the same problems as everywhere else, in slightly larger amounts.

To see what a particular road is like, look up the street on the national police crime map. It shows recorded crime close to individual streets, and a road beside a busy junction can look quite different from a back street a few hundred metres away.

Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of the cases it deals with, against about 12% nationally. That puts the force 30th of 42 on this measure. About 36% of its cases are closed without anyone identified as a suspect. Those figures cover the whole county force and are not specific to Stanwell. They tell you how likely an arrest is after a report, not how likely a crime is in the first place.

Stanwell is middling for safety. It is a little busier on the police log than the rest of Spelthorne, and an ordinary place by the standards of the country.
