What are the schools like in Southborough, Kent?

For anyone buying or renting in Southborough, Kent.

Good, and the parents buying here already know that. Nine in ten Kent schools with a grade are rated good or better. The nearest primary is a short walk for most families. Secondary is under a twenty-minute walk. Choosing a school is the easy part. Getting a place is where it gets competitive.

There are eight mainstream state primaries around here, and their average Key Stage 2 maths score is about 105. On the Department for Transport's modelling, the average home is about eight minutes' walk from a primary, which is close enough that the school run doesn't need a car. Southborough CofE Primary School is the one with the town's name on it. St Matthew's High Brooms Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School serves the High Brooms side and has the longest name on any school sign for miles around.

The five mainstream state secondaries in the area post a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 59. The average walk to a secondary is about 16 minutes. The secondaries around the town include The Skinners' School, Skinners' Kent Academy and Bennett Memorial Diocesan School, so families here have more than one kind of secondary to argue about at the dinner table.

Ofsted has graded 221 of the 245 settings it has rated across Kent as good or better, which is roughly nine in ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding. At the other end, 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. These figures cover the whole county council area, not just Southborough, so they describe the system your child enters rather than the school at the end of your road. Settings that have not yet been graded are left out of those counts.

Living near a named school does not guarantee a place at it. Admissions follow the published rules for each school, and those rules have no interest in how much you paid for the house. Check each school's own admissions criteria for the year you are applying before an estate agent's "close to" does your thinking for you.

Schools are one of Southborough's real strengths. The quality is there and close to home. What families here actually compete over is the admissions process.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
