What are the schools like in Shoreditch?

For anyone buying or renting in Shoreditch.

The schools around Shoreditch are excellent on paper. Every school with a published Ofsted grade in the borough is rated good or better. About a third are outstanding. None needs improvement. The schools are the easy part of raising a family here, and finding room for one is the hard part.

Ofsted has graded 40 schools across the London Borough of Hackney, and all 40 are good or outstanding. Fourteen are outstanding and the other 26 are good. None is rated requires improvement or inadequate. Another 24 schools have no published overall grade yet, which tells you nothing either way about how good they are. Hackney's list gives parents nowhere obvious to avoid, so the competition shifts to the outstanding schools.

Hackney Council allocates places under its own published admissions rules, so living close to a school you like doesn't guarantee your child a place there. Ask the council how far from the gate the last child offered a place lived in recent years, and check it against the flat's front door. Distance looks good on the Department for Transport's 2019 modelled journey times, which put the nearest primary about 6 minutes' walk from the average Shoreditch home and the nearest secondary about 10. Even so, a flat a few minutes from a good school can still fall outside the area it fills from.

The secondary in the area's school list is Central Foundation Boys' School, which takes boys only, so families with daughters will be applying elsewhere for secondary. Everything else on the local list is a primary, a nursery or a specialist setting. They're best judged one by one on Ofsted's register, where each grade comes with the date of the inspection behind it.

Families are rare here. At the 2021 census about 4% of Shoreditch households were couples with children and about 4% were lone parents, in a neighbourhood where most homes have one or two bedrooms. The parent reading the Ofsted register in Shoreditch is usually working out where the cot will fit in a two-bed at the same time.

Schools are one of Shoreditch's strengths. The borough has no weak school on its graded list, and the hard part for parents is housing a family close enough to get a place.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
