Solid, and slightly awkwardly arranged. One secondary takes the whole town at eleven. Before that, the infant schools hand children over to a junior school, so most families do the first-day photograph twice. The county's inspection record is mostly good rather than mostly outstanding. Steady is the word, and steady is worth more than it sounds.
Two mainstream state primaries in the area have published results, and the average score in the end-of-primary maths assessments comes out at about 103. Shepton Mallet Community Infants' School and Nursery starts children off, a junior school in the town takes them on from there, and Bowlish Infant School covers the western side. Evercreech Church of England Primary School serves the village. The average walk to a primary is about twelve minutes, which means the school run happens on foot and the argument about the car keys never gets started.
Secondary is simpler, on account of there being one. Whitstone is the single mainstream state secondary in the area, and its Attainment 8 score comes in at about 41. That arrangement spares parents the business of ranking three schools and replaces it with the quieter worry of having ranked none. The walk is about fifteen minutes and the drive about eight, so neither is much of an obstacle.
Ofsted's inspection record covers the whole of Somerset rather than this town on its own. Across the county, 101 of the 140 settings carrying a published grade are good or better, roughly seven in ten, with five rated outstanding, 32 requiring improvement and seven judged inadequate. A further 81 settings hold no published grade at all, which means not yet inspected rather than found wanting. The rest of the provision around here sits in the surrounding villages.
None of which tells you where a child will actually get a place. Naming a school is not the same as being admitted to one. Admission runs on the local authority's rules in the year you apply, not on the confident aside an estate agent makes about the catchment while showing you the back garden.
The schools here are better than average without ever being the reason anyone moves to the town. Reassuring enough to stop thinking about, not so good that you would mention them first.
