Is Shefford, Bedfordshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Shefford, Bedfordshire.

Shefford is about as safe as the rest of Central Bedfordshire, a shade worse but too close to call. The crime rate is barely above the council average. Violence makes up a smaller share of it than it does nationally. Shoplifting and vehicle crime make up a larger one. This is a town where the shop shelves and the car park see more trouble than the people do.

Police figures for the year to May 2026 recorded 741 crimes in Shefford, a published rate of about 67 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 3% above the Central Bedfordshire average.

In numbers, Central Bedfordshire's rate over the same year was about 65 per 1,000, against Shefford's 67. A gap that small could disappear with one busy month, and nobody choosing between the two should lose any sleep over it.

The town is fairly built-up for a market town, at around 3,840 residents per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment was about 2% at the 2021 census, and so was overcrowding. Those are numbers for a town that mostly goes to work and has enough room at home. None of them explains the crime rate, and in a place like this they do not try to.

The mix of crime is the more interesting part. Violence and sexual offences account for about 29% of Shefford's recorded crime, against 35% nationally. That category covers everything from serious assault to common assault with no injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Here it is smaller than usual. Shoplifting is about 17% of the total against 8% nationally, and vehicle crime about 12% against 5%. Anti-social behaviour, at about 14%, is below the national 16%. Criminal damage, at about 7%, matches the national share, and public order, at about 6%, is just under the national 7%. In Shefford most of the crime involves shop goods and parked vehicles, and less of it involves people than the national pattern would suggest. The police.uk map shows recorded incidents by location, so you can see whether they cluster near the shops or near the street you are thinking of buying on.

After a crime is reported, Bedfordshire Police, the force covering the whole county, charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally. That puts it 36th of 42 forces. About 38% of its cases close with no suspect identified. These are force-wide figures over the year to May 2026, so they describe how the county's police perform and say nothing about how safe Shefford itself is. A stolen catalytic converter is more likely to become a crime reference number than a court date.

Shefford is middling for safety. The rate is close to the council average, violence and sexual offences make up a smaller share than they do nationally, and the extra crime here falls mostly on retail stock and parked vehicles.
