Mostly settled homeowners in their fifties and older, and the town is arranged around them. Seven in ten own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-fifties. More than one household in five is a pensioner living alone. People tend to move to Sandwich after their careers, not for them.
Ownership dominates. About 70% of households own their home, 17% rent privately and 12% rent from a council or housing association. That's a town where the "For Sale" boards outnumber the letting boards, and most people on any street will be there for years.
The age profile follows from that. The median age is 54, and only about 18% of residents are aged 25 to 44, the years when people usually buy a first home and start a family. The school run happens, but the morning dog walk is busier. Anyone moving here in their thirties will find neighbours happy to help and fewer people at the same stage of life.
Income is comfortable. Modelled gross household income, before tax, was about £54,500 in the financial year to March 2023. That's a dated figure, but it's consistent with the rest of the picture: a town of people who have mostly paid off the big costs and are now spending on the garden. Much of the wealth in Sandwich sits in houses rather than payslips, which is how a town with modest salaries still keeps its detached houses full.
The 2021 census, the source for every population figure here, fills in the households. About 35% of households are one person living alone, and 22% of all households are a pensioner living alone, which is part of that same group, not an addition to it. Couples with dependent children make up about 13% of households, and lone parents about 8%. So when a listing leans on the school run, it's pitching to a small share of the people who live here, and the other buyers at the viewing are more likely to be downsizing.
Education is more varied than the golf-club image suggests. About 34% of residents hold a degree-level qualification and about 18% have no formal qualifications, with most people somewhere between the two. Full-time students make up about 1% of residents, because Sandwich has no college or university campus, and students who leave for one rarely come back until they're ready to buy.
Sandwich's population is middling in the ordinary sense: comfortable, settled and older than most. It suits people who have finished moving around more than people who are still starting out.
