Is Redhill, Surrey a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Redhill, Surrey.

Safe enough to live in, but not as safe as the rest of its borough. Crime runs about a quarter above the local average. Unemployment is low. The mix looks like a busy town centre, not a dangerous one. Redhill is a town that works for a living and gets the paperwork of a town that goes out.

Police figures for the year to May 2026 put Redhill's published crime rate at about 94 per 1,000 residents, roughly 26% above the Reigate and Banstead average. That covers 3,857 recorded crimes over the twelve months. Both numbers are published totals, and the rate is calculated on a statistical population base that differs from a simple head count. A town that is the borough's shopping, transport and office centre collects the reports for everyone who passes through, whether they sleep here or not.

Put the two rates side by side. Redhill sits at about 94 per 1,000. The Reigate and Banstead average is about 74. The gap is real, and nobody who reads both numbers will mistake Redhill for its quieter neighbours. It is also a gap between a town centre and a borough average that includes plenty of places where the most serious local offence is a badly parked horsebox.

The neighbourhood texture is dense and employed. Redhill packs about 5,740 people into each square kilometre on average. Unemployment is about 3%, and about 5% of households count as overcrowded. That is a working town of flats and terraces with little obvious hardship, which is worth knowing when reading the crime rate, without treating any of it as a cause.

The crime mix is mostly ordinary. Violence and sexual offences make up about 39% of recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a wide statutory range, including common assault without injury, so the headline sounds worse than the gap does. Anti-social behaviour runs at about 14%, below the national 16%. Public order offences are about 10%, against 7% nationally, which is the one category standing out from the national shape. Criminal damage and arson sit at about 8% against 7%, shoplifting about 7% against 8%, and other theft about 6% against 7%. Aside from public order, Redhill's crime looks like everybody else's, only more of it.

What happens after a report is a separate question. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year to May 2026. That places the force 30th of 42 forces. About 36% of cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole of Surrey, not a Redhill measure, and they say nothing about how likely a crime is to happen here. They answer the other question every victim asks, and the honest answer is "probably not".

Redhill is below average on safety for its borough: livable and far from alarming, but a buyer who wants the quiet of the surrounding villages is shopping in the wrong postcode.
