Is Redbourn a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Redbourn.

Redbourn is a safe village, with less crime than the St Albans district around it. The rate is about an eighth below the district average. Hardly anyone in the village is out of work. Anti-social behaviour is the one category that stands out. A dull crime record is exactly what a buyer should hope for.

Police.uk records about 71 crimes per 1,000 people in Redbourn for the year to May 2026, roughly 13% below the average for the St Albans local authority. That covers 455 recorded crimes over the twelve months. Both numbers are as published, and the rate is calculated on the police's own statistical-area population, so it won't match a figure worked out by dividing the crime count by the village's population.

The St Albans district as a whole recorded about 81 crimes per 1,000 people over the same year, against Redbourn's 71. The difference is real, but it is not large. A village of Redbourn's size does not need many incidents to move from one side of the district average to the other.

The figures come from a neighbourhood with an average density of about 2,790 people per square kilometre across its statistical areas, where about 2% of residents are unemployed and about 3% of households are overcrowded. Those numbers describe the kind of place this is, and they do not explain why the crime is where it is.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 30% of Redbourn's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally, so the village has a little less of the broad category that heads the list almost everywhere and includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour is about 29% here against 16% nationally, and that is the one share well clear of the national figure. Criminal damage and arson make up about 9% against 7%, vehicle crime about 6% against 5%, other theft about 6% against 7%, and drugs about 5% against 4%. With only a few hundred crimes in total, a handful of incidents can move any of those shares by several points, so they describe one year in Redbourn and may look different the next. Vehicle crime has been possible in Redbourn since 1903, when Mr Boucher, the local dentist, bought the village's first car, a 6 hp Gladiator. The police.uk street map for a particular postcode shows whether the anti-social behaviour reports are near that house, which tells a buyer more than the village-wide share does.

Once a crime is reported, Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts the force 23rd of 42 in England and Wales. In about 40% of its cases nobody is identified at all. Those are force-wide figures that measure what happens after a report, and they say nothing about whether a crime is more or less likely to happen in Redbourn.

Redbourn is safer than the district around it. The only figure that stands out is anti-social behaviour, and even that rests on a few hundred incidents a year.
