Is Rainham, London a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Rainham, London.

Rainham is less safe than the rest of Havering. It has about 120 recorded crimes a year for every 1,000 residents, roughly a quarter higher than the borough as a whole. Vehicle crime and anti-social behaviour make up an unusually large share of it. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally. Your car is more of a target here than you are.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 4,326 crimes in Rainham in the year to May 2026, which works out at a published rate of about 120 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 27% above the average for the borough. Rainham sits at the rough end of Havering, though not of London.

The Havering-wide rate over the same twelve months was about 94 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Rainham's 120. That gap is the whole of the case against Rainham on safety. It's a borough comparison, and Havering is one of the calmer corners of the capital, so "above average" here means above a fairly low bar.

The neighbourhood is reasonably dense for a suburb, at an average of about 5,940 people per square kilometre across its postcodes. About 4% of residents were unemployed at the 2021 census and about 7% of households were overcrowded. None of that explains the crime figures, but it shows what kind of place they come from: built-up family streets with plenty of people and cars close together.

Of the crime recorded over the year, violence and sexual offences made up 26%, against 35% across England and Wales. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards, and it's smaller here than nationally. Anti-social behaviour made up 23% against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime 11% against 5%. Drugs offences came to 6% against 4%. Shoplifting at 8% and criminal damage and arson at 7% were both in line with the national shares. Rainham's extra crime comes mainly from cars and street-corner nuisance, not from people being attacked. If the house you want has no drive or garage, find out where the car will spend the night before deciding it doesn't matter.

What happens after a report is a question about the whole Metropolitan Police, not Rainham. Over the year to May 2026 the force charged a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, ranking 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases were closed with nobody identified. Those figures say nothing about how much crime Rainham has, only about what tends to happen once a crime is reported anywhere in London.

Rainham is below par on safety for its borough: it is no danger zone, but anyone living here should expect to deal with car crime and anti-social behaviour more often than they would elsewhere in Havering.
