Is Radlett a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Radlett.

Radlett is a safe place, with a crime rate well below the rest of its borough. Recorded crime runs about a third lower than across Hertsmere. Hardly anyone is out of work. Hardly any homes are overcrowded. The crime that does happen goes after houses and cars more than people.

Hertfordshire Constabulary recorded 599 crimes in Radlett in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 62 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly a third below the average for the local authority. The rate is calculated on a statistical-area population, so it doesn't line up exactly with the town's headcount, and it's best taken as published.

Hertsmere as a whole recorded about 91 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same twelve months, against Radlett's 62. Whatever is pushing the borough's figure up, most of it is happening outside this town.

Radlett has about 2,700 people per square kilometre on average, around 2% unemployment and around 2% of homes overcrowded. It's a town of large houses, working households and people with room to spare. Those figures describe the neighbourhood. They don't explain the crime rate, and they shouldn't be read as the reason for it.

The mix is where Radlett looks different. Violence and sexual offences, the broad legal category that includes common assault without injury and is the largest almost everywhere, make up about 29% of Radlett's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour is about 21%, against 16% nationally. The two real outliers are vehicle crime at about 12% against 5% nationally, and burglary at about 9% against 4%. Criminal damage and arson, at about 7%, matches the national share, and other theft, at about 6%, is a little under the national 7%. Detached houses with cars on the drive attract a particular kind of visitor, and they don't come to talk to the owners. For a buyer, the practical step is to ask the sellers what's already fitted, whether that's an alarm, outside lights or a lockable gate, and to check how the insurer prices burglary cover for the postcode.

Charging decisions belong to the force, not the town. Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 23rd of 42 forces in England and Wales, in the twelve months to May 2026. About 40% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That answers a different question from how often crime happens here, and the two figures shouldn't be read together.

Safety is one of Radlett's real strengths. The crime that does turn up is mostly after property, so locks and alarms do more good here than worrying about walking home.
