Putney's schools are strong, and the local record backs that up. Almost every graded school in the borough is good or better. Nearly a quarter are outstanding. None has been graded inadequate. A family's harder problem here is getting a place.
Across Wandsworth, the borough that runs Putney's state schools, Ofsted has graded 38 of 40 settings good or better, so nineteen in every twenty clear the bar. Nine of those are outstanding and 29 good, two require improvement and none is inadequate. Another 30 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, and they sit outside that count entirely. Two schools short of a clean sweep is the kind of record that makes a parents' evening in Wandsworth fairly short.
Places are allocated under Wandsworth's published admissions rules, and owning a house round the corner from a school does not put a child in it. Most primaries on this side of the borough are oversubscribed enough that last year's furthest offer distance matters more than the school's name on a map. Ask the council for that distance for each school on the shortlist, and compare it with the walk from the front door of the house you are considering.
The school that carries the place's name at primary level is All Saints' CofE Primary School, Putney, and the borough's list also includes Hotham Primary School and Oasis Academy Putney among the primaries serving the district. At secondary level, Ark Putney Academy is the state option with Putney in its title. The independent sector has its own presence nearby, and the University of Roehampton is on the western edge of SW15 for anyone thinking further ahead. Four nearby schools have closed in recent years, so an old list of local options may name places that no longer take pupils.
The Department for Transport modelled the walk to the nearest primary at about six minutes in 2019, and the walk to the nearest secondary at about 19 minutes. Six minutes is close enough that the school run barely counts as an outing. Nineteen is long enough for an eleven-year-old to start lobbying for the bus, and in Putney the buses are plentiful enough that the lobbying usually works.
Schools are one of Putney's real strengths, and the obstacle for a family is the admissions round more than the quality of what is on offer.
