Who lives in Olney, Buckinghamshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Olney, Buckinghamshire.

Olney is home to settled, mostly home-owning households in their middle years, well educated and comfortably off. Seven in ten own their home. The typical resident is nearing fifty. More than four in ten hold a degree. Students barely register.

The 2021 Census is the source for every population figure here, and it covers Olney together with its surrounding villages. About 71% of households own their home, about 20% rent privately and about 8% rent from a council or housing association. The rental market is small, so people looking to rent will be choosing from a short list.

The median age in the Olney area is 48, and only about 20% of residents are between 25 and 44. The young adults are present, but they make up a modest share of the population, and the town's age is set by people who bought some time ago and stayed.

The Office for National Statistics models median household income across the area at about £67,000 before tax for the year to March 2023. That is a modelled average across the area, and a household of two working professionals and a household of one retired widow are both folded into it. It is the kind of money that can buy a stone house here and then spend years paying for listed-building consent.

The household mix runs from couples raising children to people living alone. About 22% of households are couples with dependent children and about 8% are lone parents.

About 28% of households are one person living alone, and about 15% of all households are a single pensioner, a group inside that 28%. That is a lot of people living alone in a town built around family houses, and many of them are in houses where the children have already left.

About 43% of residents hold a degree-level qualification, about 13% have no qualifications and about 1% are full-time students. The graduates are mostly well past graduation. Their student years happened elsewhere, and the student halls have yet to reach Olney.

About 86% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Across Milton Keynes as a whole, preventable deaths run at a rate similar to England's, and smoking, at about 11% of adults, is also similar to the national level. Those are authority-wide figures, and they say nothing about any particular street in Olney.

Olney's residents are a comfortable, well-qualified, home-owning bunch who arrived, stayed and have made the place more settled with every year since.
