Odiham is home to settled, well-qualified households who read the small print before they bought. Well over half own their home. More than four in ten have a degree. The typical resident is forty, not the retirement crowd the High Street suggests. It's a village of people who read the survey report all the way to the end.
About 61% of households own their home. About 23% rent privately and about 15% rent from a social landlord, so renting is well established even if owners set the tone. Odiham isn't a closed shop, but the owners are the ones who turn up to parish meetings.
The median age is 40, and about 28% of residents are aged 25 to 44. That's a working-age village, not a waiting room, whatever the tea rooms suggest.
Money isn't the problem. The Office for National Statistics models average household income before tax at about £79,500 for the financial year to March 2023. That's a gross figure from a few years back, not a current payslip, but it describes a comfortable place.
Odiham has 2,223 households and a population of 5,597. The 2021 Census is the source for every population figure here, and they describe a mixed village rather than a single type.
About 27% of households are one person living alone, and about 14% are a single pensioner, a group that sits inside the single-person figure rather than on top of it. Couples with children make up about 24% of households, and lone parents about 8%. So there are families, but plenty of people live alone too, and a good share of them are past retirement age.
About 43% of residents hold a degree-level qualification and about 10% have no qualifications. Full-time students make up only about 2%. School-leavers mostly leave the village to study and return later, once they've got children and a mortgage.
Of the 5,597 residents, 376 live in communal settings such as care homes, halls or similar, rather than private households. That's enough to note, not enough to change the rest of these figures much.
The people are one of Odiham's real strengths. It's a well-educated, comfortably off and settled community.
